An event of global scientific and aeronautical significance and immense American pride took place 50 years ago this year when Apollo 16 blasted off for the moon to conduct the first scientific exploration of the lunar highlands in April 1972. The pilot of the lunar module was General Charles Duke who will be in attendance at this auction with his valiant wife, Dorothy. The framed item on display was presented to Fiona Capstick‘s late husband, Adelino Serras Pires, by General Duke in July 1973 after his outstanding big game Safari in Mozambique with Adelino who had helped bring the first US astronauts on safari to that great country. The historic personalized signed and dated photograph shows General Duke standing on the surface of the moon, the youngest and last astronaut to do so. To the right is a miniature US flag that General Duke carried onto the lunar highlands during the unprecedented scientific exploration. The flag is authenticated and signed by the General. Beneath it is the official emblem of the lunar mission, showing the names of the three astronauts, the others being John Young, now deceased, and Ken Mattingly who also signed this memento. A renowned quotation by the 17th century French philosopher, Renée Descartes, after whom the lunar highlands were named, features below the emblem. Accompanying this unique memento from an internationally acclaimed American to a renowned member of the international hunting community is Adelino‘s searing autobiography, published in New York, Lisbon and Johannesburg, which features General Charles and Dorothy Duke very prominently. The book is signed by Adelino and the author, Fiona Capstick, and will be signed by General Duke for the top bidder. A second book, in near-fine condition, from Peter Capstick‘s personal library, is the highly sought after, 1928 expanded and profusely illustrated edition of “The Game Animals of Africa” by Richard Ludekker. General Charles Duke has included a lunar map, which has been to the surface of the moon, to complete this priceless package. Ladies and gentlemen, the profound significance of the thoroughly authenticated lunar memento and the actual presence of General Charles Duke at auction during the golden anniversary of the Apollo 16 lunar mission, make this an event which cannot be duplicated by anyone anywhere at any time. DSC FOUNDATION THANKS FIONA CAPSTICK FOR THIS 100% DONATION. Fiona Capstick, ralli@mweb.co.za.
